Let me set the scene: a sunny day, a curious Labrador named Blu, and meâarmed with enthusiasm and absolutely no spatial awarenessâdeciding to visit Odiham Castle.
What could possibly go wrong?

Iâd heard it was a lovely spot, steeped in history, with a scenic canal walk and a castle that once hosted King John himself. So naturally, I pointed Wendy (my 20-year-old motorhome and occasional drama queen) down a lane so narrow it looked like it had been designed for medieval goats, not motorhomes.
I turned in confidently. Wendy did not share my confidence.
We creaked, we scraped, we squeezed past hedges that whispered, âYou shouldnât be here.â And thenâI parked. Sort of. Wendy was wedged in like a cork in a wine bottle. I stared at her. She stared back. I considered crying. Instead, I made lunch.
Because when youâre stuck in a questionable parking spot with no clear exit strategy, the only logical thing to do is toast a sandwich and pretend you meant to stay.
After my impromptu picnic, I decided to walk to the castle. Itâs just down the canal, they said. Itâs a beautiful walk, they said. What they didnât say was which side of the canal. I chose the wrong one. Blu trotted happily while I marched confidently in the wrong direction for a solid 15 minutes before realizing the castle was on the other side. Cue dramatic U-turn and mild swearing.

Eventually, we arrived. Odiham Castle is a stunning ruin with more history than I expected. Turns out King John popped by in 1215 before heading off to sign the Magna Carta. I stood there, gobsmacked. Iâd come for a walk and a sandwich, and ended up in the footsteps of royalty. Blu was unimpressedâhe found a stick and declared it more interesting than constitutional history.

And yes, I did eventually get Wendy out of her ridiculous parking spot. It involved a lot of reversing, a bit of praying, and one very confused squirrel.
Odiham Castle: 10/10 for history, 2/10 for motorhome access, and 100/10 for unexpected sandwiches.
