The big day of viewing Wendy arrives

It all started on a Saturday morning in Andover, when I decided to do something wildly sensible: buy a 20-year-old motorhome named Wendy.

Because what could possibly go wrong?

Armed with caffeine, courage, and my partner (who had no idea what he was in for), we set off for the New Forest. The plan? View Wendy, fall in love, and drive her home like seasoned road warriors.

The reality? Slightly less glamorous.

We arrived to meet Wendy’s previous owners—lovely people who clearly adored her.

They gave us a full tour and explained how everything worked.

I nodded enthusiastically, pretending I understood phrases like “hook-up cable” and “grey water tank,” while secretly wondering if Wendy came with a manual titled Motorhoming for the Mechanically Bewildered.

They showed me how to turn on the gas, flush the loo, and operate the heating system. I smiled, nodded, and mentally filed it all under “Ask Google Later.”

Then came the moment of truth: driving her home.

I looked at Wendy. Wendy looked at me. I looked at my partner. He looked at me. I said, “Nope.”

So he drove Wendy back like a hero, and I followed in my car like a nervous chihuahua trailing a Great Dane. Every time he turned a corner, I held my breath. Every time she wobbled, I whispered, “Please don’t fall apart, Wendy.”

We made it back in one piece—Wendy, my partner, and me (though my nerves were slightly frayed). And just like that, I became the proud owner of a motorhome I was too scared to drive.
